“Canada Races to Develop Indigenous Rocket Amid SpaceX Concerns”

Published on

Canada, as the sole G7 nation lacking its own launch capabilities, is striving to develop a Canadian-built rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with indigenous access to space amid concerns that SpaceX, a major player in the industry, may reduce its launch services. These rocket companies are facing challenges in meeting tight deadlines and adapting to changing government priorities, adding complexity to the journey to space.

Due to Canada’s reliance on external providers for rocket launches, including American companies like SpaceX, Canadian customers, both private and governmental, have limited control over launching their satellites into orbit. These satellites play crucial roles in various sectors such as telecommunications, military applications like threat detection, and earth observation activities like wildfire tracking.

To address this dependency and enhance sovereignty in space activities, the Canadian government has designated space as a key sovereign capability in its Defense Industrial Strategy. Additionally, legislation introduced in April aims to authorize launches from Canadian soil if approved. Recent funding initiatives, including $8.3 million each for three Canadian companies, are part of a multi-year effort to achieve light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.

Among these companies, NordSpace, established in 2022, focuses on developing satellites, robotic space technologies, and the necessary infrastructure for launches. While NordSpace faced setbacks in its initial suborbital rocket test in 2025, the company plans to make another attempt soon. Reaction Dynamics, another contender, has been working on a unique engine design since 2017, with both companies striving to achieve orbit by 2028.

The newest player in the field, Canada Rocket Company, aims to build a medium-lift rocket powered by nine methalox-fueled engines. With private investments totaling $22 million, in addition to government support, the company is making significant strides toward its goal, including establishing a $30-million test facility in London, Ont. The first launch is targeted for 2032, reflecting the substantial time and testing required for such endeavors.

As SpaceX transitions to its Starship rocket, concerns arise about reduced access to its Falcon 9 services for satellite launches post-2028. This shift could impact smaller players relying on SpaceX’s rideshare program. Companies like Rocket Lab are seen as potential alternatives to address this shift in the market. Canadian satellite communications company Kepler, which heavily relies on Falcon 9 launches, is among those considering alternative providers.

The emergence of Canadian rocket makers becomes essential in light of SpaceX’s plans, with Canada Rocket Company eyeing a market opportunity in the wake of Falcon 9’s phasedown. Despite optimism within the industry, challenges persist, requiring sustained funding and support for these ventures to successfully reach orbit in the coming years. The long-term nature of these projects underscores the need for patience and perseverance in the pursuit of regular launches from Canada.
