Canadian Man Deported After 9-Month ICE Detention

Published on

An individual from Edmonton who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now back in Canada and sharing his detention experience. Curtis Wright, aged 40 and a permanent resident in the U.S., was held in Texas for nine months due to a past misdemeanor drug possession charge when he was 17. Wright, who wanted to stay in the U.S. to be with his young sons in Texas, was eventually deported to Canada in mid-August.

During an interview with Edmonton AM, Wright described the challenges he faced upon his return to Texas from Mexico. He was detained by ICE officials, who questioned him about the old charge, leading to his immediate detention and transfer to a federal facility without a set court date until December.

Despite having no prior encounters with such situations during his frequent travels to the U.S., Wright found himself in a prolonged legal battle within the U.S. immigration system. He detailed the lack of options provided to him and the constant delays in his court proceedings, which ultimately led to his deportation back to Canada.

Wright shared his determination to fight for his release to be reunited with his sons, seeking support from senators and other officials, but the efforts were unsuccessful. Reflecting on his detention experience, Wright highlighted the poor living conditions, mistreatment by officers, and the psychological toll of being confined in overcrowded facilities.

After enduring nine months in detention, Wright made the difficult decision to accept deportation to Canada for the sake of his family. He plans to resume his career in the oil and gas industry in Edmonton, where he has the support of his employer and family members.

This powerful journey sheds light on the complexities and challenges faced by individuals navigating the U.S. immigration system and the impact it can have on their lives and families.
