Thunder Bay’s Krista Scharf, a prominent curler, is set to lead Team Despins in the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Following the disbandment of her previous team in March after a successful decade on the ice, which included multiple appearances at the prestigious Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Scharf is making a comeback to competitive curling.

Having represented both Ontario and Northern Ontario at the Scotties 12 times, clinching two silver and two bronze medals, Scharf expressed her excitement at rejoining the sport. Team Despins approached her recently due to the absence of Nicole Westlund-Stewart, a long-standing member rehabilitating from a back injury. Scharf sees this as an opportunity to balance competitive play with her personal life.

Transitioning to a new team presents a significant challenge for Scharf, but she is eager to bring her expertise to the group and adapt to their strategies. Team Despins aims to compete for the Northern Ontario championship and secure a spot at the 2027 Scotties. The addition of Abby Deschene to the team further emphasizes the need for rigorous practice to achieve their goals.

With Robyn Despins at third, Deschene at second, Rebecca Carr at lead, and Westlund-Stewart as the fifth player, the team is gearing up for a demanding season ahead. Scharf is determined to contribute her best efforts to help the team succeed and relish the rewarding experience of competing at the Scotties.
