The iconic figure known as The Mighty Sparrow, a significant figure in propagating calypso music worldwide since the 1950s, has passed away at the age of 91. Born Slinger Francisco, he peacefully departed while surrounded by his family in New York after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family.
Hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco relocated to Trinidad and Tobago with his parents in 1937, where he made a name for himself in the calypso music scene. Renowned for his talents as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, he gained admiration and affection from many within the entertainment industry.
Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso music, served as the fertile ground for The Mighty Sparrow’s rise to fame, producing a string of hits in the genre, such as “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”
Kamla Persad Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, praised The Mighty Sparrow for carrying the essence and narratives of their people worldwide through his music, humor, and invaluable cultural contributions. The country has recognized his achievements with national awards, and in 1987, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies.
The passing of The Mighty Sparrow has elicited tributes from leaders across the Caribbean, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica. His extensive career spanned six decades, during which he recorded hundreds of songs and performed at prestigious venues worldwide, including New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
Known for his party tunes as well as his topical and political compositions, The Mighty Sparrow’s impact transcended borders, with songs like “Model Nation,” “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev” resonating with audiences. He also celebrated Toronto’s Caribana festival with the song “Toronto Mas” in 1972.
