“Record-High El Niño Emerges, Potentially Super Strong”

Published on

The highly anticipated El Niño has arrived and is already proving to be significant. Earlier this year, climate experts predicted the development of an El Niño in the central Pacific region. Over time, models increasingly hinted at a potent or “super” El Niño, though uncertainty remained.

In June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the emergence of warmer conditions in the specific Niño 3.4 region, meeting the criteria for an El Niño when temperatures are 0.5°C above average. Currently, ocean temperatures in this area are nearly 2°C higher than normal, marking a record high for this period.

Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, noted that temperatures are already exceeding the 2°C threshold for a very strong El Niño, possibly leading to unprecedented conditions later this year. El Niño is part of the larger El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, bringing warmer temperatures to the region compared to La Niña, which brings cooler conditions.

Forecasts suggest the El Niño peak may arrive in October, with November or December being more probable. The transition from La Niña to El Niño has been swift this year, raising questions about the underlying causes. The potential for a substantial temperature anomaly during this El Niño has led to discussions about its connection to climate change.

While the impacts of this El Niño are yet to be fully understood, concerns about food security in tropical regions and the risk of wildfires in Western Canada are growing. Hausfather stressed the need to prepare for the significant effects of El Niño on agriculture, natural ecosystems, and oceanic conditions.
