Economists suggest that the overall impact may not be significant in terms of the total value of Canadian exports to the U.S., which amounted to over $527 billion in 2025. The new tariffs are estimated to affect approximately $3 billion worth of Canadian goods, while the removal of tariffs applies to about $2 billion worth. Despite these figures, certain industries are expected to bear the brunt of the measures, causing uncertainty for business owners.

The retaliatory actions taken by the White House in response to Canada’s counter-tariffs include bans on alcohol, dairy, and motorcycles. However, the effect on these sectors may be minimal as Canada’s dairy and motorcycle exports to the U.S. are relatively low. Alcohol exports, valued at $550 million last year, could see some impact, but the bans are projected to affect only about $700 million worth of Canadian exports.

Experts view these actions as more symbolic than substantive, providing some relief to industries that were spared from tariffs. Despite concerns, the escalating trade tensions are seen as less impactful economically compared to other factors such as rising oil prices due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

While the actual economic impact of the tariffs may be limited, the broader implications lie in the uncertainty they create for businesses on both sides of the border. The sudden imposition of new measures without much lead time leaves little room for businesses to adapt, potentially denting business confidence and disrupting trade relationships.
