University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently received an Ig Nobel Prize, a whimsical counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honoring unconventional and imaginative research in academia. Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a splash-free urinal.
The team, led by fluid physicist Zhao Pan, experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to minimize splashing and simplify cleaning. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus as the superior design due to its reduced splash and easier maintenance compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team sported bright yellow raincoats, symbolizing their readiness to receive accolades from fellow quirky scientists. Despite the unconventional nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical importance of creating more hygienic and inviting public restroom facilities.
In addition to Thurairajah’s recognition, other Canadian researchers were also honored at the ceremony. These included a team from the University of Toronto receiving the Economics Prize for their study on the tendency of affluent individuals to engage in unethical behaviors like taking candy from children and a group from McGill University winning the Technology Prize for using mosquito proboscises as high-resolution 3D printing nozzles.
The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns for attendees. Thurairajah, emphasizing the international nature of scientific collaboration, supported the decision to ensure global participation in the event and foster cross-border scientific exchange.
