Sabrina Gervais is a mother, healthcare professional, and experienced flag football player aiming to become an Olympian. Leading Canada’s national women’s team at the 2026 world championship, Gervais and her team are vying for both a gold medal and a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut as an Olympic sport.
“Becoming an Olympian would be a dream come true for me,” Gervais expressed. “The thought of participating in the Olympics never crossed my mind before, but now that it’s a possibility, I believe in our chances if I can maintain my health and leadership role within the team.
“It would truly be a dream realized.”
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship kicks off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada facing Panama and Brazil before taking on Japan in the initial matches.

The top two teams will secure Olympic berths, while a third spot will be available if the United States reaches the gold-medal game, given their host status in Los Angeles.
The ongoing world championship is not the final opportunity for Olympic qualification. Failing to secure a spot in Germany would necessitate participation in the 2028 final Olympic qualifier series, following the continental championship next year.
Canada emerges as a strong contender for the gold in Germany following their qualification by finishing as runners-up in last year’s IFAF Americas Continental championship, where they lost to Mexico in a game cut short due to severe weather conditions.
Gervais, hailing from Maskinonge, Quebec, remains optimistic about facing Mexico in Germany and hopes for a full game this time.
“We’ve been working on our game to compete against them,” she revealed. “If we face them, we’re prepared.
“Reflecting on last year’s experience, we aim to learn from it and deliver our best performance.”
Adding to their accolades, Canada secured a bronze medal at the 2025 World Games in China, marking their first international women’s flag football achievement. Gervais acknowledges that their previous successes have elevated their visibility and expectations in Germany.
“Our team is gaining recognition,” Gervais commented. “Defeating the U.S. recently and the ensuing discussions reflect our progress.
“Our focus remains on giving our best effort, and the outcomes will follow.”
