Gord MacIntyre is aiming to secure a national championship at the ongoing Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The Edmonton soccer player, who plays as a left forward for Team Alberta, has set multiple objectives for the event, which serves as a platform for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Medicine Hat, MacIntyre emphasized his desire for fair play, exceptional competition, and a successful performance.
With meticulous planning spanning eight years and extensive travel undertaken by 1,700 athletes, the games have officially commenced. The city of southern Alberta is keen on showcasing its warm hospitality and anticipates leaving a lasting impact on both participants and visitors, with a focus on economic development.
Nearly 1,700 athletes are participating in a variety of sports during the week-long event, including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. The opening ceremonies at the city’s 6,000-seat hockey arena witnessed vibrant crowds waving provincial flags and cheering enthusiastically.
Governor General Louise Arbour, after attending the inaugural day, commended the remarkable level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship on display, describing it as an inspiring phenomenon. Nicola Lambrechts, chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, also expressed admiration for the athletes’ exceptional performances and the pride they exude representing their provinces.
In Medicine Hat, over 1,500 local volunteers have enthusiastically embraced their roles to accommodate the athletes, family members, and coaches who have gathered for the event. The city, with a population of 69,000 located 290 kilometers east of Calgary, is fully booked with 13 hotels accommodating the influx of visitors.
The history of hosting major events in southeast Alberta is a point of pride for Medicine Hat, which boasts modern facilities and a dedicated volunteer culture. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city’s commitment to hosting top-tier sporting events remains unwavering. A blend of government grants, community contributions, and corporate sponsorships has funded the $3.6 million budget for the games, ensuring a seamless experience for all participants.
