A 16-year-old adolescent has been sentenced to eight months in jail for tossing a 15kg sofa over a shopping center balcony, narrowly avoiding hitting a shopper. The incident took place on March 1 at Westfield shopping center in Stratford, East London. The teenager, who cannot be named due to being underage, admitted to recklessly causing a public disturbance and property damage.

The prosecution highlighted the significant risk of severe injury posed by the sofa being thrown onto a walkway where people usually pass. The defendant admitted to frequently engaging in such reckless behavior as part of pranks with his friend, including throwing objects off bridges and trains.

The boy’s lawyer acknowledged that his actions were a result of seeking attention and showing off, emphasizing the need for rehabilitation due to his immaturity. Despite the defendant expressing remorse and apologizing in court, the District Judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense and handed down an eight-month detention and training order, with half to be served in a secure facility.

The judge emphasized the intentional and deliberate nature of the act, especially considering the potential harm caused by the sofa narrowly missing a shopper. The court also noted the psychological impact such incidents can have on individuals in public spaces like shopping centers.
