Mini Eggs hold a special place in my heart. I’m grateful they’re not a year-round temptation, or I’d be spending a fortune on them. However, come Easter time, they are the perfect chocolate treat with their delightful aroma, satisfying crunch, and charming pastel colors.
As a popular branded product, Mini Eggs can sometimes be pricey and hard to find during the Easter season. To explore more budget-friendly alternatives, I decided to sample own-brand versions from various supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda. Excited to try something new, I dove into the taste test adventure.
In addition to the supermarket options, I also picked up a pack of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs for comparison. While aiming for similar-sized packs from each store, Aldi only had larger packets available – not that I minded. After trying them all, one standout bag surpassed even the original, and I plan to stock up on it before Easter arrives.
Starting with the classic Cadbury Mini Eggs, their familiar sugary scent and delightful crunch never fail to impress. The smooth chocolate center is a true delight. As Easter draws nearer, these sought-after treats can become scarce in stores. Typically priced around £2 per 80g pack, they are currently unavailable at Asda and Tesco.
Moving on to Asda’s own-brand milk chocolate mini eggs, priced at just £1.12 for an 80g pack, they offer a more affordable option compared to Cadbury. However, the taste didn’t quite match up to the premium quality of the original. While decent, they landed in the middle of the taste test, earning a score of 2.5 out of 5.
Next up were Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, making them the second-cheapest option. Despite a surprising texture, the taste fell short of the mark compared to the original, warranting a score of 1 out of 5.
Evaluating Aldi and Lidl’s offerings, the Choceur Mini Eggs stood out for their size and price – £3.39 for 256g. While they were not the worst, the chocolate flavor was somewhat bland, earning them an average score of 2 out of 5.
Turning to M&S for a taste test, their speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars had caught my eye on social media. Trying their Mini Eggs for the first time, I was impressed by their size and perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio. The filling melted in my mouth and proved to be addictive, possibly even more so than Cadbury’s. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag, or £1.94 per 100g, M&S’s version emerged as a solid substitute for the original, earning a perfect five-star rating from me.
With M&S exceeding expectations, I’m eager to explore more of their speckled egg creations. For those seeking a Cadbury’s alternative, M&S is the go-to brand.
