The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in almost 250 postcode regions across England and Wales today. This action coincides with the Met Office issuing multiple winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. More than 500,000 households qualify for these payments, entitling them to £25 to assist with heating costs.

The current round of payments has been initiated in 246 postcode areas, covering regions such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, as well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. The list of postcodes eligible for today’s payments can be found below.

Cold Weather Payments target individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. While a similar program operates in Northern Ireland, Scotland provides support for heating expenses annually, not tied to cold weather periods. This winter, 697 postcode regions have received £25 payments, with 18 areas qualifying for two payments due to extended cold spells.

The newest payments are estimated to reach around 532,000 households, predominantly in Greater Manchester. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is projected to be £13.3 million. In England and Wales, payments are triggered when temperatures are forecasted to fall below zero for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists anticipate a cold spell leading up to the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated in various regions.

Approximately 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million receiving Pensions Credit. Beneficiaries of Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment.

Not all recipients of these benefits automatically receive Cold Weather Payments. Eligibility is determined by several factors, with detailed information available on GOV.UK. Payments of £25 are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, displaying a unique payment reference including the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’.

Triggered by various weather stations, an estimated total of eligible households are set to benefit from Cold Weather Payments in different regions. In Northern Ireland, the Katesbridge weather station has initiated the payment process.
