The government is implementing new regulations to crack down on unauthorized sellers by permitting only licensed shops to distribute vapes and cigarettes.

In a bid to deter young individuals from picking up the vaping habit, officials are scrutinizing the variety of flavors and ingredients in vape products. Plans are underway to address an existing legal loophole.

Presently, any establishment can market tobacco and vaping products, leading to the widespread availability of low-cost illicit items accessible to minors.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock stated, “We are focused on closing a significant legal gap by mandating shops to possess a license for the sale of tobacco, vapes, and nicotine goods.

“Our new measures will enhance child protection efforts by eliminating unscrupulous retailers from our commercial areas and informing adults about legitimate product vendors.”

The government is also soliciting expert advice on vape flavors, nicotine potency, and product presentation. A forthcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to foster a smoke-free generation and discourage children from a lifelong addiction.

According to the proposed regulations, unlicensed sellers will be subject to unlimited fines or immediate penalties of £2,500.

Recent research from King’s College London and University College London strongly indicates that adopting plain packaging for vapes could reduce the appeal of vaping to children.

The study revealed that 53% of surveyed individuals aged 11 to 18 expressed interest in trying vapes when presented with branded packaging and flavors.

This percentage decreased to 38% when plain packaging and flavor descriptions were used.
