The state pension, which is provided by the Government, is determined by an individual’s National Insurance (NI) history. Private pensions, on the other hand, are built from personal contributions to savings accounts.
Typically, people save for retirement through employer-sponsored schemes or personal pension plans they manage independently. Regardless of the chosen retirement funding method, specific dates in 2026 should be marked in calendars for planning purposes.

The state pension is subject to annual adjustments following the triple lock system. This mechanism ensures that the state pension increases every April based on the highest value among earnings growth between May and July, inflation in September, or a 2.5% minimum increase.
Starting from April 2026, the state pension will see a 4.8% rise, aligning with wage growth. The full new state pension will elevate from £230.25 per week to £241.30 per week.
Concurrently, the old basic state pension will climb from £176.45 per week to £184.90 per week.
Currently, both men and women can claim the state pension at 66, but this threshold is slated to increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028. Individuals born on April 6, 1960, will be the first cohort affected by this change.
Instead
