Counterterrorism authorities are currently looking into potential death threats made by Jihad Al-Shamie, the assailant behind the synagogue attack, towards a Member of Parliament due to the MP’s stance on Israel.

Reports indicate that Conservative MP John Howell received threatening emails after expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense.

One of the emails, signed by someone named “Jihad Alshamie,” contained a message stating, “It is people like you who deserve to die,” although it remains uncertain if this individual is the same as the attacker.

Former MP John Howell, who represented Henley from 2008 to 2024, was provided with police protection and opted to remove his local office details from his website.

Addressing the threatening letter he received, Mr. Howell emphasized the importance of taking such threats seriously, not only for himself but also for his family and staff, highlighting the potential risks involved.

Mr. Howell commended the Thames Valley Police for offering him valuable security advice and mentioned the possibility of having police presence during his district office sessions if he ever felt unsafe.

Speaking on a recent TV appearance, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that Al-Shamie was not actively being investigated by counterterrorism authorities or security agencies and had not been referred to Prevent.

Jihad Al-Shamie was fatally shot by police following an attack on a synagogue in Manchester, resulting in two additional fatalities in what authorities have categorized as a terrorist incident.

The incident occurred on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall.
