Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana had stored the address of the crime scene in his phone contacts to ensure he remembered the location, an inquiry revealed. The investigation into the mass stabbing incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party last summer involved analyzing Rudakubana’s Nokia phone. Detective Chief Inspector Jason Pye, who headed the Merseyside Police probe, noted that Rudakubana had a basic phone rather than a modern device commonly used today.
During the examination of the 17-year-old’s phone contacts, it was discovered that he had saved the exact address of the attack scene, 34a Hart Street, as a contact. Additionally, Rudakubana had saved the postcode of the same location separately and had a contact for One Call Taxis, the taxi firm he used to travel to the crime scene.
When questioned about why Rudakubana saved the address, DCI Pye explained that it was for him to remember where he needed to go on the day of the attack. Rudakubana committed the horrific crime on July 29 last year, resulting in the tragic deaths of three children and injuries to several others.
The inquiry highlighted that Rudakubana appeared to target women and girls during the attack, which was advertised on social media platforms like Instagram. The event details included the names of teachers and hosts, age groups of attending girls, and the location and postcode.
The investigation also revealed that Rudakubana had purchased the knife used in the attack from Amazon weeks before the incident. Prior to booking the taxi to the crime scene, he searched for violent content online. Rudakubana left his home armed with the knife, called a taxi, and was driven to the location of the attack by the taxi driver.
Rudakubana was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 52 years for the murders and attempted murders. The ongoing inquiry aims to provide a comprehensive account of the attack, the killer’s background, and his interactions with various state agencies. The inquiry chairman has pledged to address all concerns of the victims’ families and ensure measures are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
