Matches Fashion, a luxury retailer, is making a comeback next year after being acquired post-administration. The company faced financial troubles in March 2024, reportedly owing over £210 million to top designer brands like Gucci and Anya Hindmarch.
Previously owned by Frasers Group, Matches was sold to Joe Wilkinson and Mario Maher, the founders of the luxury shopping app Mile. They have now taken over Matches Fashion and its in-house brand Raey, forming a new luxury group called Hulcan, as reported by Vogue Business.
Wilkinson and Maher aim to preserve Matches’ legacy of curation, exclusivity, and quality products while introducing fresh perspectives to the brand. They expressed their commitment to innovating and creating value for both brands and customers.
Matches Fashion mainly operated online, with a few physical stores in London. Frasers Group revealed that the business had been facing losses, culminating in a £33.5 million loss in the fiscal year ending January 2023. Despite efforts to stabilize the business, it became evident that significant restructuring and funding were needed beyond what was feasible.
Frasers Group stated that the decision to place Matches into administration was made by its directors due to the challenging financial situation. However, Frasers remains dedicated to the luxury market and its brand partnerships.
