Former England and Wales Cricket Board coach Graham Thorpe’s widow believes that more support from the cricket governing body could have saved his life. Thorpe, a renowned cricketer and assistant coach for England until 2021, tragically took his own life in August due to prolonged struggles with anxiety and depression.

An inquest in July 2025 revealed that Thorpe had descended into depression after losing his coaching position in 2022 and had previously attempted suicide. The coroner cited shortcomings in the care provided by health professionals before Thorpe’s passing, ultimately ruling his death as suicide. Thorpe had been undergoing therapy for mental health issues for 18 months following his departure from ECB.

While the ECB had funded his treatment and extended health insurance after leaving in February 2022, Amanda Thorpe expressed that more support during his transition period could have made a difference. She emphasized that if his cricketing career had not abruptly ended, he might still be alive today. Amanda highlighted the lack of adequate remote support and the worsening of his condition despite seeking help.

Amanda Thorpe criticized the support system, stating that her husband needed more assistance that was not provided. The ECB has been approached for a response.
