Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has declared that Russian fighter jets entering Polish airspace will be shot down without hesitation. Tusk emphasized the non-negotiable stance during a recent press conference, citing recent incidents involving Russian aircraft breaching the airspace of Poland, Romania, and Estonia.
The escalation occurred when three Russian MiG-31 jets violated Estonia’s airspace, remaining in the region for nearly 12 minutes without proper authorization. The jets flew over the Vaindloo Island area, failing to establish communication with local air traffic controllers and turning off their transponders, sparking criticism from Estonian officials who labeled the intrusion as “unprecedentedly brutal.”
NATO promptly intercepted the Russian aircraft, denouncing the violation and highlighting the need to address such threats to territorial security. In response to the incident, Poland’s Prime Minister expressed the necessity for unwavering support from NATO allies in the event of heightened tensions, emphasizing the importance of unity in addressing potential conflicts.
Following the airspace violation in Estonia, Prime Minister Kristen Michal hinted at invoking NATO’s Article 4 for discussions among allies regarding territorial security threats. Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, condemned the Russian aggression, calling for increased political and economic pressure to counter Russia’s border testing and aggressive behavior.
The series of airspace violations has raised concerns among Baltic states and NATO members, underscoring the need for a united response to ensure regional security and deter future escalations.
