The Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK criticized her involvement in Parliament, stating that it dishonors the memory of the deceased and highlights a lack of accountability for actions that led to loss of life.
The Scottish lingerie mogul faces mounting scrutiny for her connections to scandal-plagued PPE Medpro, which has been instructed to reimburse the UK Government over £122 million for providing substandard goods. A recent High Court ruling determined that the company breached its contract with the Department of Health and Social Care by supplying 25 million defective surgical gowns.
Baroness Mone, a Conservative peer appointed by David Cameron, has come under fire for her association with PPE Medpro. In response to criticism from Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused her of bringing disgrace to the party, Baroness Mone declared her reluctance to return to the House of Lords as a Conservative peer. Although removing her peerage would necessitate an act of Parliament, she has the option to resign from her position in the Lords, emphasizing that she has no intention of resuming her role as a Conservative peer.
Baroness Mone refuted allegations of wrongdoing in her dealings with PPE Medpro, stating that she never received any financial benefits from the company. Amid ongoing controversy, the Tories confirmed that she would not receive the Conservative whip if she were to rejoin the Lords. The Conservative Party emphasized the importance of upholding high standards among parliamentarians under Badenoch’s leadership and expressed disappointment in Baroness Mone’s conduct.
Accusations of a vendetta against Baroness Mone surfaced following calls from various politicians, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves, urging her not to return to the Lords. The Mirror initially disclosed the ties between Baroness Mone and PPE Medpro, shedding light on lucrative contracts awarded to the company for supplying protective equipment during the pandemic.
Regarding her involvement with PPE Medpro, Baroness Mone and her husband, Doug Barrowman, reportedly profited from £65 million in company earnings. The couple referred PPE Medpro to ministers through a special channel in 2020 as the government sought to secure vital protective gear during the pandemic. Despite admitting to misleading statements to the media about their association with PPE Medpro, the couple denied any wrongdoing and criticized the recent judicial ruling.
Baroness Mone denounced the court decision as a biased outcome favoring the government, while Barrowman criticized the judgment as a predetermined result in favor of the Department of Health and Social Care and the government’s interests.
