The popular TV show, “The Traitors,” has been a must-watch for me every season, regardless of my professional obligations. Since its inception, I’ve been hooked on the show, always rooting for the Traitors to emerge victorious.
I vividly remember the heart-wrenching moment when Mollie was betrayed by Harry at the eleventh hour in the second series, and the disappointment when Wilf fell short of claiming the top prize in the debut season. In the recent third season, my hopes were pinned on Charlotte, who I believe remains the standout Traitor we’ve seen so far.
However, this season took an unexpected turn as my loyalty shifted from supporting the entire group of Traitors to backing just one individual. In the finale, both Stephen and Rachel were declared winners, sharing the prize money.
The outcome left me utterly disheartened. Stephen had an opportunity to strategize the game effectively, hinting to Claudia Winkleman that he contemplated voting against his fellow Traitor due to fear of retaliation.
At a critical juncture, the Traitors unexpectedly displayed loyalty, leading to what I consider the most disappointing result in the show’s history. I anticipated Rachel might betray Stephen during the final elimination, but she opted for Jack instead.
Stephen held the power to manipulate the game by eliminating Rachel, mirroring the dramatic betrayal seen in series two between Harry and Mollie. Unfortunately, this season failed to captivate me like its predecessors. Even the introduction of the Secret Traitor element fell short, lasting only briefly before Fiona’s unmasking.
Comparing it to the Seer twist from the previous season, this season lacked the same level of excitement and intrigue. The absence of plot developments and insufficient tension on Rachel and Stephen undermined the viewing experience.
My concern is that with each season revealing more about the show’s mechanics, the element of surprise diminishes. To sustain its impact, the upcoming fifth season of the show must introduce significant changes.
A true Traitor should embody betrayal through and through, a sentiment that was not fully realized by the two winners of this season, who demonstrated a level of loyalty unexpected in their role.
