“Save on Winter Energy Bills: Tips & Support Options”

Published on

Households are facing higher energy costs compared to previous years, but there are strategies to reduce these expenses. The current Ofgem price cap stands at £1,755 annually for the average household paying via direct debit, with a planned increase to £1,758 starting in January.

The upcoming price adjustment coincides with the peak winter season when most people increase their heating usage. Ofgem recommends switching to a fixed energy tariff to save money, as this type of deal locks in rates for a specific period.

According to a comparison table on moneysavingexpert.com, the cheapest fixed tariff available on the market is over 10% lower than the current price cap. Additionally, there are alternative options like tracker tariffs that adjust rates based on wholesale energy prices.

During the winter months, additional financial support may be available, particularly for the elderly or low-income households. Eligible individuals could receive a £150 discount on their electricity bill through the Warm Home Discount scheme. Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300 are distributed to pensioners born before September 22, 1959, with those earning over £35,000 required to repay the amount through the tax system.

Cold Weather Payments of £25 are issued when temperatures remain at or below 0C for seven consecutive days. It is possible to receive multiple payments during extended periods of cold weather.

Simple actions like reducing energy consumption can lead to significant bill savings. For instance, turning off appliances on standby mode can save around £45 annually, while avoiding overfilling the kettle could cut costs by £30 per year. Adjusting the thermostat down by just one degree could save about £90 without compromising comfort.

In case of financial difficulties with energy bills, contacting the supplier promptly for assistance is advisable. Payment plans, breaks, and manageable debt repayment options may be offered. Vulnerable customers can register for the Priority Services Register to receive advance notice of power cuts, emergency support, and meter-reading assistance.

Checking for draughts in the home before winter arrives is crucial to prevent heat loss. Simple measures like using draught excluders under doors, which are inexpensive at less than £10, can significantly reduce energy wastage. Draught-proofing, according to the Energy Saving Trust, could save around £85 annually. Low-income households may qualify for boiler grants or insulation support through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.
