“Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools Cultivates Healthy Learning”

With the commencement of the current academic session, numerous students are engaging in a novel educational experience that is revolutionizing their learning, dietary habits, and overall growth.

Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is an innovative program that distributes millions of portions of nutritious food to schools catering to a higher proportion of students eligible for free school meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.

Among the participating schools is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, which recently enjoyed a special visit from actor and comedian Babatunde Aléshé. Babatunde brought a generous supply of fruits and vegetables, engaging the students in a lively session on the importance of consuming five portions of these items daily.

Observing the children’s enthusiasm for learning about healthy food, Babatunde, a parent himself, expressed his delight at their involvement in activities like chopping pineapples, devouring mangoes, munching on carrots, and peeling oranges. The program, initiated in 2024, provided over 10.8 million portions of fresh produce to 411 schools in its inaugural year.

Due to its success, the program has been expanded to include more than 500 schools this academic year, ensuring each child receives a daily serving of fruits and vegetables. Feedback from teachers involved in the previous year’s program indicates a significant improvement in classroom behavior, focus, and energy levels among students.

Babatunde emphasizes the satiating nature of fruits and vegetables, highlighting their role in enhancing energy levels for both classroom activities and playtime. Reflecting on his childhood, he acknowledges the positive impact healthy eating can have on academic performance.

The variety of items provided includes bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be utilized in breakfast clubs or to establish healthy snack options. The program aligns with Tesco Stronger Starts, which assists schools and community groups by funding essential food and activity resources to support children in the UK.

Babatunde underscores the educational aspect of the program, emphasizing the importance of teaching children about the nutritional benefits of various fruits and vegetables. By empowering children with knowledge about healthy eating habits, the program aims to influence their food choices positively.

Furthermore, the program has had an emotional impact on children’s well-being, with instances of students being appointed as “fruit monitors,” boosting their confidence and sense of purpose.

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco UK CEO, acknowledges the positive outcomes reported by schools participating in the Fruit & Veg for Schools program and expresses the company’s commitment to expanding the initiative to reach more underprivileged communities in the UK.

As more schools and students embrace this initiative, Tesco’s efforts are not only nourishing young minds but also sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
