Clifford Lee, a prominent jockey, has emerged from a medically induced coma following a motorcycle accident during his vacation. Last week, the 29-year-old suffered a neck fracture after falling headfirst and was promptly taken to the hospital. Despite his impressive track record of 94 wins this year, Lee will face an extended period off the racing circuit, as confirmed by his employer Karl Burke.

Burke mentioned that Lee has now awakened from the coma and is scheduled for a surgical procedure to address the fractures. Encouragingly, Burke expressed optimism about Lee’s resilience and recovery prospects post-operation.

In a noteworthy achievement in August, Lee added the Prix Morny title at Deauville to his list of race-riding accomplishments, riding the juvenile filly Venetian Sun. Throughout the summer, Lee secured several other significant victories aboard horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent.

Lee, who had won his last four races, was on a break in Greece before heading to Scotland with his family when the unfortunate accident occurred. Burke revealed that he was unaware of Lee’s interest in motorbikes and expressed gratitude that the situation was not more severe.

In 2025, Lee’s horses generated a total of £2.3 million in earnings in Britain, with Al Qareem contributing £237,857 from four wins. Despite not coming from a racing background, Lee, originally from south-east London, has showcased exceptional pace judgment in races like the Cambridgeshire, where he triumphed consecutively on Boiling Point and Liberty Lane, both trained by Burke.
