In December 2022, a man hunting deer near Portal Hunting Club in Georgia stumbled upon what initially appeared to be a deceased hog in a ditch. To his shock, upon closer inspection, he discovered the headless and legless remains of a woman and promptly contacted 911 for assistance.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement at the scene, a knife, a storage container containing blood, clothing, and a severed leg were discovered within a three-mile radius, prompting the area to be designated as a crime scene and an investigation to be launched.
Subsequently, additional body parts, including a buried head, were unearthed over the following days, painting a grim picture of the victim’s fate as her body had been left to decompose and become prey to animals.
Despite the woman’s demise occurring several weeks prior, authorities encountered challenges in identifying her. After releasing a composite sketch to the public with no success, they turned to a specialized DNA genealogy testing lab for assistance. Finally, in May 2023, the victim was identified as 40-year-old Mindi Mebane Kassotis, who resided in Savannah, Georgia, with her husband, Nicholas Kassotis, a former navy judge advocate general.
Following the identification, a perplexing narrative unfolded as Nicholas Kassotis claimed that he and Mindi had lived in fear after being warned by an individual named “Jim McIntyre” that their lives were in jeopardy due to his professional connections. Subsequent investigations discredited Kassotis’s elaborate account, revealing unsettling truths about his past and present actions, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial.
Ultimately, Kassotis, convicted of murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and interfering with the scene of death, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 25 years. The judge denounced his actions, highlighting the web of deceit Kassotis had spun and the tragic end that befell Mindi, who spent her final days unknowingly endangered by the very person she trusted.
