“UK’s ‘Hannibal the Cannibal’ Marks 17,000 Days in Solitary”

The UK’s most enduring prisoner has spent 17,000 consecutive days in solitary confinement, aiming to break a global record. Robert Maudsley, known as ‘Hannibal the Cannibal’ for his quadruple killings, has been transferred to Whitemoor prison in Cambridgeshire after years at Wakefield jail, nicknamed “Monster Mansion” due to its dangerous inmate population. Maudsley has spent 47 years in isolation, surpassing the milestone of 17,000 days alone in his cell, a likely world record and the longest in the UK penal system.

Celebrating his 72nd birthday on June 26, Maudsley, following a hunger strike, expressed desires to return to Wakefield, a request currently denied. He became the UK’s lengthiest serving prisoner after the passing of Ian Brady, the Moors murderer, in 2017. Maudsley’s incarceration began in 1974 for manslaughter, and in 1978, while serving a life sentence, he killed two inmates at Wakefield prison.

Having also murdered a patient at Broadmoor secure hospital in 1974, Maudsley gained nicknames like ‘Spoons’ and ‘Hannibal the Cannibal,’ although claims of brain consumption were disproven. Despite comparisons of his cell to Dr. Hannibal Lecter’s fictional quarters from “Silence of the Lambs,” prison authorities have remained silent on individual cases, maintaining that solitary confinement is not practiced in the UK penal system. Charles Foussard, a French Australian, holds the world record for nearly 71 years of imprisonment from 1903 to 1974, confined in a mental asylum in Australia.
