The Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association issued a joint statement expressing deep sorrow over the passing of licensed apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who tragically died at his home near Newmarket.
Described as a beloved son, brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team, Jakes’ family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Having recently ridden at Nottingham, Jakes was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford. With an impressive track record of 59 wins from 519 appearances since 2023, Jakes was considered one of the most promising young talents in the sport.
Hailing from a racing family, Jakes followed his father’s footsteps into the industry, where he excelled, garnering praise for his horsemanship and attitude. His notable victories included riding Suzi’s Connoisseur at Lingfield in March of a particular year.
The British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, Brant Dunshea, expressed devastation over Jakes’ untimely death, highlighting his talent and positive reputation among trainers.
