After the tragic death of Jessica Brady at 27 due to cancer being overlooked, a new regulation known as ‘Jess’s Rule’ has been instituted. Despite numerous visits to her GP over a span of six months, Jessica was only diagnosed with advanced cancer after seeking a private referral. Her mother, Andrea Brady, expressed concerns that Jessica’s symptoms were not taken seriously by the medical professionals she consulted. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, coughing, vomiting, and weight loss were dismissed due to her age.
Following the private referral on November 26, 2020, Jessica was diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma. This type of cancer originates in mucous glands within organs like the lungs and can lead to the growth of tumors. Despite medical intervention, Jessica passed away three weeks later in December 2020.
In response to this tragedy, the NHS has introduced ‘Jess’s Rule’, urging doctors to reassess cases where a diagnosis has not been reached after three appointments or if the patient’s condition deteriorates. This rule mandates additional opinions, physical examinations, further testing, and specialist referrals as necessary.
Reflecting on the loss of her daughter, Jessica’s mother emphasized the importance of persistent advocacy for proper healthcare. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged Jessica’s preventable death and commended her family for advocating for patient safety. The government aims to improve patient care and prevent similar tragedies by implementing measures like ‘Jess’s Rule’.
