Premier League Tax Avoidance Probe Uncovers £888M Paid

Published on

Premier League clubs and their players have been involved in a tax avoidance investigation, with nearly £900 million being paid, according to newly released data. Since 2015, HMRC has instructed top players, clubs, and agents to pay a total of £888 million as part of the probe. Last season alone, £90 million in unpaid taxes was recovered by authorities. Clubs settled £73 million in obligations, players paid £15 million, and agents reached settlements worth £2 million, as revealed in a Freedom of Information request.

HMRC stated that the additional tax identified from their investigations is categorized as yield, which encompasses various elements such as calculating additional revenue owed, preventing revenue loss from improper claims, and estimating the impact of their actions on customers’ future conduct.

The ongoing investigation involves 397 probes, including examinations at 32 clubs in the Premier League and Football League. A total of 277 players and 88 agents are currently under scrutiny. Notably, 33 clubs are part of the HMRC inquiry into a tax scheme that falsely claimed £17 million in public funds. The investigation, which began in 2015, has targeted prominent clubs like Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham.

Additionally, notable financial transactions have surfaced, with examples including Chelsea receiving £3 million in research and development tax relief and payments. Forest claimed £607,000 in the latest financial year, while Fulham secured £758,000 in credits from 2019 to 2024. Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea have also been involved in financial matters, with Chelsea facing allegations from the FA regarding agent payments and third-party player ownership in transfers.

The investigation, initiated in 2015, encompasses income tax issues involving clubs, owners, players, and agent fees, according to financial investigator Stuart Cotton. He highlighted the complexity of payments to agents, image rights, and potential tax challenges faced by clubs. Notably, high-profile figures like Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson have come under HMRC scrutiny, showcasing the widespread impact of the investigation within the football industry.

Moreover, instances of tax disputes involving players like Oleksandr Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy have emerged, shedding light on the financial pressures faced by football stars. The broader impact of the Premier League on the UK economy is substantial, with the league and clubs contributing £4.2 billion to the UK Exchequer and supporting over 90,000 jobs annually.

Despite the significant financial implications and ongoing investigations, a Premier League spokesperson declined to provide a comment on the matter.
