Telecoms Unite to Stop Foreign Call Center Scams

Published on

Mobile networks such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking action to prevent foreign call centers from posing as banks in an effort to combat scams. These networks have committed to enhancing their systems to eliminate the ability of foreign call centers to fake UK numbers within the next year.

Scammers often engage in number spoofing, a technique where they alter their caller ID to mimic trusted sources, deceiving recipients into thinking the calls are legitimate. The new initiative aims to expose calls originating from overseas and put an end to this fraudulent practice.

In addition to network upgrades, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to detect and block suspicious calls and messages. Advanced call tracing technology will also be provided to law enforcement agencies to aid in tracking down scammers nationwide.

Major telecommunications companies, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to combat fraudulent activities.

Recent data indicates that 96% of mobile users make decisions on whether to answer calls based on the displayed number, with most individuals reluctant to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.

Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the government’s commitment to combating spoofed calls, which enable scammers to deceive the public through false identities and promises. The government’s initiative to eliminate call spoofing within a year aims to protect individuals from falling victim to scams and make the UK a challenging environment for scammers.

Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud by phone or through their website. Specific contact information for reporting scams in Scotland is provided, along with guidance on reporting scam emails, text messages, and websites. If suspicious of a scam call, individuals are advised to disconnect immediately and verify the caller’s details online without calling back the provided number. In case of suspected account compromise, contacting the bank promptly and changing compromised passwords is recommended to safeguard against fraud.
