Gian van Veen emerged victorious at the European Championship after defeating Luke Humphries in a thrilling match. The 23-year-old from the Netherlands displayed remarkable composure to secure an 11-10 win over the top-ranked player in the world.

The tension was palpable at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle as Van Veen staged a comeback from being 4-1 down, overcoming missed opportunities and a resilient Humphries to force a deciding set. Ultimately, Van Veen’s nerves of steel shone through as he clinched his first major title with a successful double 16.

In an emotional interview with ITV Sport following his win, Van Veen expressed his overwhelming joy, stating, “Crazy. I never thought I would cry when winning my first TV title, but here I am, overwhelmed by this moment and the incredible crowd. Winning my first major title in Germany is truly phenomenal.”

Acknowledging Humphries’ skill and sportsmanship, Van Veen praised his opponent, saying, “Luke hitting the bull to level the score at 10-10 is a testament to why he is the world number one. He is an amazing person, and tonight is one I will never forget.”

Humbly accepting defeat, Luke, also known as ‘Cool Hand,’ acknowledged Van Veen’s exceptional performance, admitting, “I was hoping he would falter under pressure at the end, but he didn’t! I’m devastated by the loss, but I accept it.”

Van Veen’s triumph comes with a substantial £120,000 prize, propelling him to seventh place in the PDC Order of Merit, climbing eight spots closer to a top-five ranking.

Despite facing challenges on his journey to the final, Van Veen showcased his talent by defeating Damon Heta 6-3, dominating Ryan Searle 10-2, and securing a 10-5 victory over Ryan Joyce. In a tense semi-final match against Michael van Gerwen, Van Veen emerged victorious with an 11-10 win, albeit not without a minor injury to his throwing hand due to his technique.

Reflecting on his injury, Van Veen revealed, “I sustained a slight injury on my thumb during the match, causing some blood. Despite the discomfort, I managed to focus and get the job done.”

With his resilience and determination, Van Veen overcame the challenges posed by his injury to claim the European Championship title, solidifying his place among darts’ elite players.
