EE mobile customers are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Reports indicate that cybercriminals are targeting EE users with urgent messages claiming imminent loss of significant EE reward points unless immediate action is taken, as stated by cybersecurity specialists at Bitdefender.
Bitdefender issued a warning through an Instagram post, advising individuals to be wary of messages asserting that thousands of EE reward points are expiring within a short deadline. The cybersecurity experts emphasized that such messages are likely fraudulent.
The scam involves cybercriminals masquerading as the popular EE network to entice recipients into clicking on malicious links that redirect them to counterfeit websites. These deceptive websites are crafted to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.
The success of this scam hinges on creating a sense of urgency, with perpetrators banking on users acting impulsively without due consideration.
According to Bitdefender, scammers employ a specific strategy by setting tight deadlines to induce a fear of loss in individuals. This urgency serves as a manipulative tactic, with the provided link not leading to EE’s legitimate website but redirecting to a fraudulent platform.
It is essential to note that authentic EE alerts are only displayed within official EE accounts and not through unsolicited texts. Any message urging immediate action or presenting a countdown should raise suspicion and be treated as a potential scam. Suspicious texts should be forwarded to 7726 and promptly deleted.
This type of fraudulent activity has previously targeted EE customers and is not a new occurrence. Earlier this year, users reported receiving plausible fake messages regarding reward points, with some individuals falling victim to the scam by unwittingly providing personal information.
EE has reiterated that it does not operate a points-based program and has outlined examples of scam messages circulating, such as those urging users to click on links for redeeming supposed rewards.
EE’s latest guidance emphasizes:
• Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links received via text messages
• Refrain from responding to suspicious messages
• Do not contact the sender’s provided number
• Never disclose personal or financial information
EE users are advised to exercise caution and vigilance in light of these ongoing scam attempts.
