A disturbing video has surfaced depicting a man tracking down his former wife in a hospital in south-central Turkey before fatally shooting her. The footage, obtained by NewsX, captures the tragic moment when Atilla Ayintapli, 44, shot Eser Karaca, 42, at the hospital where she worked as a medical secretary. Karaca had recently obtained a restraining order against Ayintapli, but he ignored it. In the CCTV footage from May, Ayintapli is seen entering the office with a shotgun, chasing Karaca and her colleague as terrified witnesses flee. Despite Karaca’s attempts to shield herself, Ayintapli coldly fired multiple shots at her, leading to her tragic death.
Following the incident, Ayintapli fled the scene while Karaca’s colleagues rushed to her aid. Despite being rushed to the hospital’s emergency room, Karaca succumbed to her injuries. Ayintapli was promptly apprehended by Turkish police and is now facing charges for Karaca’s murder and for threatening her colleague. He confessed to the crime during interrogation and is awaiting trial, with prosecutors seeking a life sentence for him.
Femicides, which involve the targeted killing of women and girls, have been on the rise in Turkey. The country’s judicial system has come under scrutiny after a controversial ruling that could lead to reduced sentences for men who murder women if they claim to have been provoked. This decision has sparked outrage among activists and legal experts, who warn of dangerous implications for Turkey’s approach to gender-based violence.
