A surge in criminal activity has been reported in affluent neighborhoods of north London, where thieves are targeting parked cars at night to steal parcel shelves. Residents in Primrose Hill, Kentish Town, and Highgate have witnessed a string of incidents where rear windscreens were smashed, and parcel shelves were stolen. These items are being singled out due to their ease of removal and potential online resale value of up to £150.
A resident in Highgate, aged 37, shared his experience of waking up to his Mercedes being broken into on July 12 around 5:30 am. He highlighted that thefts are frequent in specific areas like North Hill, View Road, and Church Road, especially on Friday nights. The resident mentioned receiving a notification about the break-in, where only the parcel shelf was taken, a pattern seen among other affected neighbors.
According to the resident, a local garage confirmed multiple similar incidents involving the theft of parcel shelves from cars of the same model. The thieves reportedly target vehicles, break the rear-view glass, and swiftly steal the shelves for resale, potentially using Lime bikes as a getaway vehicle. Various car brands, including Hyundais, Minis, Jaguars, and Vauxhalls, have also been targeted in the area.
In response to the escalating thefts, residents are now taking precautions by removing and storing their parcel shelves indoors at night, considering the high replacement costs. The community is on alert, with neighbors collectively vigilant against potential theft attempts.
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement on MetEngage, emphasizing the importance of securing vehicles in well-lit areas or private garages to deter theft. The Highgate Society, a local residents’ association, highlighted the recent thefts in the North Hill area and advised residents to safeguard their cars by parking within camera view and keeping valuable items out of sight.
As the community grapples with these thefts, authorities and residents alike are working to combat the criminal activities and protect their properties.
