London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized US President Donald Trump, calling him racist, sexist, and Islamophobic. Trump renewed his attack on Khan during a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, labeling him a “terrible” mayor and suggesting London might adopt sharia law.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Khan stated that it seems he is constantly on the American leader’s mind despite leading a diverse and successful city. Khan further described Trump as racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.
Khan highlighted the positive aspects of London, mentioning the record numbers of American visitors and the city’s global reputation for culture, investment, and sports. Cabinet minister Pat McFadden also defended London, emphasizing that the city operates under British law, not sharia law.
Various Labour MPs, including Wes Streeting and Dame Emily Thornberry, expressed support for Khan, emphasizing his inclusive leadership and commitment to diversity. They denounced Trump’s comments as false and urged the US ambassador to address the President’s Islamophobic rhetoric.
