A high school student from Japan was apprehended on suspicion of trying to kill his uncle by adding extracts from a deadly oleander plant to his miso soup.
Oleander is known to be extremely toxic to both humans and animals, with all parts of the plant, such as the leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit, containing highly poisonous substances.
The 18-year-old, hailing from Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture, allegedly attempted to murder his uncle on July 17 by finely chopping and incorporating oleander leaves into his meal around midday.
Fortunately, the uncle detected an unusual flavor in the miso soup and immediately spat it out, avoiding a lethal dose of the oleander plant. He quickly sought medical attention and suffered only minor symptoms, as per a report by News On Japan.
The motive behind the attempted poisoning, as stated by the suspect during questioning, stemmed from his frustration with his uncle’s loud snoring, according to Nippon TV.
The student confessed to the crime, admitting, “I couldn’t tolerate his snoring any longer, so I planned to eliminate him.”
Oleander, a perennial shrub commonly found along roadsides and in gardens, boasts red or white flowers but harbors toxic properties in all its parts.
Approximately six hours after the poisoning incident, the same student was arrested at JR Chiba Station for assaulting two women in a nearby restroom with a hammer. The victims, aged in their 40s and 50s, sustained minor injuries.
Using a 24-centimeter hammer, the teenager reportedly targeted the shoulders of the victims consecutively inside the women’s restroom at the station. The women fortunately did not sustain severe injuries.
The student allegedly expressed to investigators, “I aimed to harm any vulnerable woman and cause them pain.”
Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the sequence of events involving the student. Prosecutors are evaluating potential charges of attempted murder against the teenager, who is currently in custody.
