“Father Left Paralyzed After Ibiza Dive Tragedy”

Published on

A father has been paralyzed following an unexpected incident while on a family vacation in Ibiza. David Hayes, 37, was placed in a medical coma for weeks after injuring his spine during a dive into the sea on the popular Spanish island. Medical professionals have confirmed that he is now quadriplegic, with no movement from the chest down, as a result of a broken C5 vertebra and spinal cord damage in the C4-C6 region.

The holiday was arranged for his wife Elly, who was recently diagnosed with cancer and now has to balance her cancer treatment, caring for their children, frequent visits to David’s bedside, handling their businesses, and managing various administrative tasks.

Despite undergoing immediate surgery in Spain to stabilize his neck with a titanium and artificial bone implant, doctors have ruled out the possibility of David regaining mobility. A fundraiser has been initiated to support the couple in covering expenses for treatment at the Salisbury Spinal Treatment Centre, located approximately two hours from their home.

David’s recovery progress is promising, with improvements in breathing and the ability to consume solid foods. Initially reliant on a ventilator post-accident, he encountered complications like pneumonia and a collapsed lung due to ingesting seawater. He is currently receiving intensive care at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Elly’s unwavering strength and determination are highlighted as she prepares to provide around-the-clock care for David, who will require lifelong medical attention and significant home modifications. The fundraiser aims to ensure David receives top-notch care, advanced therapies, and cutting-edge assistive technologies for an enhanced quality of life.

The fundraiser has garnered over £28,300 of its £30,000 goal, demonstrating widespread generosity and support from donors. The funds will be utilized post-rehabilitation at the Salisbury Spinal Treatment Centre for ongoing care, home adjustments, or advanced wheelchair technologies. Donors are thanked for their contributions, with assurances that every donation will directly impact David’s well-being.
