Passengers Panic Over Surging Visa Fees Under Trump

Published on

Passengers in a state of panic were observed rushing off a crowded aircraft upon learning that foreign visa fees had surged to a staggering £74,000 following an announcement related to Donald Trump. At San Francisco airport, several passengers attempted to abandon their Emirates flight bound for Dubai just moments before departure. Concerns arose among travelers about potential fees if they left the US and returned after September 21.

Confusion ensued due to conflicting statements from the Administration regarding the nature of the fee. Initially, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated it would be an annual fee, but the White House later clarified it as a one-time charge. The hike in visa fees primarily affected H-1B visas, a category for highly educated foreign professionals. Notably, existing visa holders were unaffected by the new restrictions, rendering the passengers’ panic unnecessary.

A passenger, Masud Rana, who recorded the incident, noted that the chaos led to a three-hour delay, a rare occurrence as passengers are typically not permitted to disembark once onboard. However, the pilot made an exception given the “unprecedented” circumstances. The captain addressed the situation over the intercom, reassuring passengers that they could choose to deplane if they wished.

Rana described the scenario as “complete chaos” in his social media post, highlighting the anxiety caused by President Trump’s order affecting H-1B visa holders, particularly alarming Indian passengers who opted to leave the aircraft. The announcement and ensuing confusion sparked travel disruptions across the US, with many foreign workers scrambling to return before the deadline.

The H-1B visa program aims to attract skilled foreign workers to fill specialized roles in the US. According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 60% of these visas are granted to individuals in computer-related fields. Clarifications were made that existing H-1B visa holders currently outside the US would not face the exorbitant re-entry fee, ensuring their ability to travel in and out of the country remains unaffected by recent proclamations.
