Renowned filmmaker and actor Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89 at his residence in Utah. His peaceful demise occurred while he was asleep early Tuesday morning.
Redford’s death follows his recent return to television after a six-year hiatus. He made a guest appearance in the show Dark Winds on AMC/AMC+ earlier this year.
Involved as an executive producer on Dark Winds, Redford collaborated with George R. R. Martin, the author of the Game of Thrones series. Both Redford and Martin had cameo roles in the Season 3 premiere of the show, portraying prison inmates engaged in a chess match.
The filming of Redford and Martin’s scene was conducted on a closed set as per Redford’s request. Dark Winds follows the narrative of Navajo police officers in the 1970s.
Chris Eyre, the episode director, shared that the idea of Martin and Redford’s appearances had been discussed since the show’s inception. Despite initial nervousness, Eyre praised Redford’s kindness during the filming process.
Redford’s last on-screen appearance before his cameo in Dark Winds was in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame. His retirement announcement prior to the film The Old Man & The Gun in 2018 was later revealed to be a mistake.
Known for his activism and directorial ventures, Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in 1978. His publicist confirmed his passing and requested privacy for the family.
Tributes have poured in for Redford, celebrated for his roles in iconic films like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and All The President’s Men. Fans expressed their sadness and admiration for the late actor on social media platforms.
