The Kremlin has given a negative response to Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting that Ukraine could reclaim occupied territories, his characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” and his assertions of economic instability.
Russia has rebutted the President’s statements, asserting that he is “deeply mistaken” and emphasizing that its invasion is not without purpose. A statement from Russia also highlighted the slow progress in restoring relations with Washington.
Trump mentioned that the option of returning to the original borders where the conflict began is viable and expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability, with the backing of the European Union, to recapture all lost territory.
However, Russia rejected Trump’s portrayal of the country as a “paper tiger” and refuted claims of economic instability, asserting that its military is advancing and the economy remains robust. The President also suggested that NATO support could aid Kyiv in regaining lost land and criticized Russia’s military actions.
During a contentious address, Trump advocated for NATO to intercept Russian planes entering allied airspace and praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his resilience in the conflict. He described Ukraine’s efforts as commendable and disparaged Russia as a weak adversary.
The escalating tensions coincide with an advisor of Vladimir Putin warning of the potential use of nuclear weapons in Europe. Sergei Karaganov, known as Professor Doomsday, asserted that deploying tactical nuclear arms may be necessary to prevent a larger conflict between the US and Russia.
