Boxing legend Ricky Hatton was discovered deceased by hanging, as revealed in an inquest today. Hatton, a two-weight world champion, was found lifeless at his residence in Manchester by his longtime friend and manager, Paul Speak, last month. His funeral took place last week, with fans lining the streets before a service at Manchester Cathedral.
During the inquest this morning, coroner Alison Mutch informed the court that Hatton was found unresponsive in his bedroom by Mr. Speak, who was supposed to accompany him to Dubai for a press conference regarding his comeback fight. It was mentioned that Hatton lived alone and was last seen by his family looking well on September 12. However, he did not attend a scheduled event the next day, and Mr. Speak found him unresponsive on September 14.
Although the full results of the post-mortem examination are pending, the provisional cause of death was determined as hanging. Mr. Speak expressed his belief that Hatton did not intend to end his life, emphasizing that he had much to live for. Hatton had openly discussed his struggles with mental health and addiction in the past, but his family stated that he was in a positive state before his passing.
In the days leading up to his death, Hatton appeared cheerful, sharing updates on his fitness routine and a supportive video for a bullied child on Instagram. His family remembered him fondly in an emotional statement, highlighting his kindness and loyalty.
A public memorial service took place at Manchester Cathedral, attended by various notable figures from the boxing and sports world. Following the service, a march to the Etihad Stadium was held in Hatton’s honor. His impactful boxing career, marked by victories and defeats, endeared him to fans worldwide.
Hatton’s involvement in mental health advocacy and charitable work was also acknowledged, reflecting his dedication beyond the boxing ring. Despite facing challenges in retirement, he had announced plans for a professional bout in Dubai before his untimely demise.
