A medical professional has raised an alert regarding a newly emerging Covid variant that displays unusual early symptoms.
Concern has been mounting over the proliferation of the novel Covid strain named ‘Stratus,’ characterized by two variants, XFG and XFG.3.
Initially detected in January this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated XFG as ‘under observation’ by June due to its escalating prevalence worldwide.
The XFG variant has swiftly disseminated throughout Ireland in recent times, constituting 73% of all documented Covid infections nationwide last week.
Moreover, as of September 3, the UK Health Security Agency reported a 7.1% uptick in Coronavirus cases across England compared to the prior week, with uncertainty surrounding the extent of impact from the XFG strain.
Stratus, spreading more rapidly than its predecessors, may manifest with slight variations in patients. Identifying the key symptoms and implementing preventive measures is crucial to curbing the infection rate surge.
Dr. Kader, known for dispensing medical advice on his TikTok channel @ask.doctor.k, highlighted that this new strain affects the digestive system in addition to typical Covid symptoms.
Dr. Kader emphasized, “Understanding the new Covid variant, Stratus or XFG, is vital. The symptoms differ slightly from previous variants, often commencing with ear, nose, and throat issues such as a hoarse voice or severe sore throat. Additionally, gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, and acid reflux are prevalent.”
While noting that Stratus typically results in a “milder” infection, Dr. Kader cautioned about its heightened contagiousness, attributing the rapid spread to changing weather conditions leading people to stay indoors more and pass on infections.
Dr. Kader recommended three pivotal steps to mitigate infection risks amid the ongoing efforts in the UK to coexist with Covid-19 post-pandemic.
Additionally, he advised TikTok users to self-isolate if feeling unwell until symptoms alleviate, as reported by the Irish Mirror.
It is advised for the public to remain vigilant for all 18 recognized Covid symptoms to promptly identify potential infections.
