“Real Living Wage Sees 6.7% Increase: Almost 500,000 Workers Benefit”

Almost 500,000 employees are in line for a salary increase following the announcement of a raise in the Real Living Wage. The Real Living Wage is a voluntary wage for individuals aged 18 and above, employed by organizations affiliated with the Living Wage Foundation.

This wage is determined based on the essential costs of living, including food, clothing, and household expenses. The hourly rate is set to climb by 85p to £13.45 per hour, marking a 6.7% increase, and by 95p to £14.80 per hour in London, a rise of 6.9%, surpassing the mandated minimum wage.

Applicable to all workers over 18 employed by Real Living Wage-certified employers, which now number over 16,000, this year’s increment translates to a Real Living Wage worker earning £2,418 more annually than someone on the minimum wage, and £5,050 more in London, as reported by the Living Wage Foundation.

Katherine Chapman, the executive director of the Living Wage Foundation, emphasized the importance of a wage that meets basic life requirements. The Real Living Wage aids workers in managing expenses such as rent, bills, and food, providing stability and security.

She highlighted that despite the challenges faced by low-paid workers, over 4.5 million individuals are still earning below the Real Living Wage threshold, struggling to escape in-work poverty. Encouraging employers to adopt fair wages aligning with living costs, Chapman praised the growing movement with more than 16,000 accredited employers proving the positive impact of paying the Real Living Wage.

Unison general secretary, Christina McAnea, lauded the wage rise as a crucial step in combating poverty among low-paid workers. Stressing the need for government intervention in ensuring decent pay rates for public service employees, she warned of potential staff losses in critical sectors like the NHS if wages fail to keep pace with the Real Living Wage.

McAnea called for collaboration between ministers and unions to rectify the disparities, especially for NHS staff at risk of falling behind in remuneration compared to the Real Living Wage, potentially leading to workforce shortages in essential roles like porters and cleaners.
