Premier League Teams Collaborate to Boost Youth Employment

Published on

Premier League teams are engaging with government officials to back youth hubs and assist unemployed young individuals in securing jobs. The new head of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Pat McFadden, is set to reveal plans in collaboration with leading clubs to address the growing number of youth not in education or employment.

The newly appointed Pensions Secretary will introduce a £25 million initiative to double the number of youth hubs to over 200 locations, including establishments like football clubs and libraries. These hubs offer guidance on CV preparation and career advice to individuals aged between 18 and 21.

According to reports, all Premier League clubs are currently in discussions with the government to establish youth clubs. Additionally, Mr. McFadden will finalize an agreement with the English Football League and Rugby Football League to form partnerships.

Recent statistics indicate that in April to June 2025, there were approximately 948,000 young people aged 16 to 24 classified as NEETs – not in employment, education, or training. This marked an increase of 24,000 compared to the previous quarter.

Mr. McFadden, who will be visiting Crystal Palace Football Club, expressed concern over the high number of young individuals not engaged in education or work. He stated that through the expansion of Youth Hubs and collaborations with organizations like the Premier League, opportunities are being created for the next generation, with a focus on those most in need.

Clare Sumner, the chief policy and social impact officer at the Premier League, emphasized the league’s support for expanding Youth Hubs to provide equal opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds. She highlighted the Premier League’s substantial investments in football and communities from 2022 to 2025, aiming to support individuals in need and foster growth opportunities for the youth.

By partnering with the government on the Youth Guarantee program, the Premier League aims to enhance the offerings of youth hubs to empower young people further. Sumner emphasized the broader impact of football beyond the game, emphasizing its role in supporting individuals, unlocking potential, and strengthening communities nationwide.
