Energy providers such as Octopus and OVO are distributing complimentary electric blankets to households facing financial difficulties. Electric blankets consist of insulated wires that warm up when connected to power, offering a cost-effective alternative to central heating for reducing energy expenses.
Octopus customers experiencing financial challenges may qualify for a free electric blanket through the Octo Assist fund, a £40 million support initiative aimed at assisting struggling customers. Eligibility typically requires difficulty in paying energy bills or being classified as a vulnerable customer, which may include the elderly, households with young children, or individuals with specific health conditions.
In addition to free electric blankets, eligible individuals may access grants to clear energy debts, payment plans, and payment breaks. Applications can be submitted online through the Octopus website.
OVO Energy is also providing free electric blankets through its Extra Support Package, a £56 million support program. Apart from electric blankets and smart sockets, households in need may receive free home upgrades ranging from loft insulation to new boilers.
Help is extended to households experiencing financial hardship, with OVO offering payment plans and emergency credit for those struggling to pay bills. Online applications can be made via the OVO website.
Recently, energy bills have risen with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,720 to £1,755 for a standard dual fuel household on direct debit payment. This price cap remains effective until December 31, subject to future updates, and applies to customers on standard variable rate tariffs.
While there is a price cap on the charges for gas and electricity units, as well as standing charges, the total cost of energy is still based on individual consumption levels. The price cap figure reflects the expected annual expenses for a household with average energy usage according to Ofgem’s assumptions.
