“Mother-Daughter Duo’s Survival Tale: Escaping Montserrat Eruption”

Published on

A mother and daughter shared their incredible survival story after narrowly escaping a devastating volcanic eruption on the island of Montserrat. Olivette and Adena Johnson recounted their harrowing experience of fleeing the catastrophic Soufriere Hills eruptions in the mid-1990s, which decimated a significant portion of the island.

Despite the dangers posed by the active volcano, the resilient duo continues to reside on Montserrat, with Adena capturing and showcasing the vibrant life on the island through her TikTok page. Reflecting on their journey, Adena mentioned a temporary relocation to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands before ultimately returning to their beloved Montserrat.

The Johnsons gained attention worldwide for their TikTok series explaining their decision to live near an active volcano, notably Soufriere Hills, which reawakened in 1991 after a long period of dormancy. The eruptions forced mass evacuations, with tragic losses and significant displacement of residents, including the Johnson family.

Following the eruptions, an exclusion zone encompassing most of the island was established, drastically reducing the population of Montserrat. Olivette vividly recalled the chaotic evacuation scenes and the perilous moments she witnessed, emphasizing the unpredictability and severity of the volcanic activity.

Adena, who was a child during the eruptions, remembered seeking refuge in churches turned makeshift shelters, highlighting the unity and resilience of the community in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges, Olivette’s determination to provide for her family persisted, even finding innovative solutions like sewing at the airport to sustain them during uncertain times.

The family’s journey led them to the US Virgin Islands temporarily before returning to Montserrat, where they now reside in Gerald’s village, actively participating in the island’s reconstruction and cherishing the close-knit community spirit that defines their home. Adena expressed pride in sharing their story on social media platforms like TikTok to educate and inspire others about the resilience and heritage of Montserratians.

Their experience serves as a testament to the strength and perseverance of the people of Montserrat, embodying a spirit of resilience and unity in the face of natural disasters.
