A father issues a cautionary message to travelers following the tragic passing of his son alongside his two boys during a flight to Bulgaria. Chris Neill, aged 40, and his sons, Reece, 20, and Archie, 9, began their journey from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport to Burgas on September 16 last year when he suddenly became unwell onboard. Chris’ parents, Mal and Lesley, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for repatriating his body back to the UK.

The fundraiser exceeded expectations, raising nearly £10,000 surpassing the £15,000 target. On the anniversary of Chris’ demise, Mal disclosed that the funds covered the repatriation expenses with the surplus being designated to a trust fund for the two boys.

Mal promptly traveled to Germany the following day to bring Reece and Archie back home safely, managing arrangements with the coroner in Cologne. He emphasized the importance of travel insurance, revealing that Chris mistakenly believed he had coverage through his former bank, Halifax, not realizing it had lapsed.

Mal advocates for travelers to verify their insurance coverage before embarking on trips, emphasizing the necessity of adequate protection. He urged, “Always check your insurance status, and don’t risk traveling without it.”

Despite battling terminal cancer and residing in Bromborough, Merseyside, Mal shared how Reece, accompanied by his girlfriend and friends, honored his father’s memory by climbing Snowden. The family also formed a close bond with Rachael-Victoria Leyland, the paramedic who attempted to save Chris’ life during the fateful flight. Rachael-Victoria recounted the harrowing experience on Facebook, detailing her efforts to assist Chris before his tragic passing.

Reflecting on his son, Mal, a former Merseyside Police officer, fondly remembered Chris as a devoted Everton fan who prioritized his children and lived life exuberantly. He described Chris as a generous and beloved individual, highlighting his positive impact on those around him.
