Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged retaliation following a move by Western nations, including the UK, to acknowledge Palestinian statehood. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, cautioned Israel against expanding settlements in the West Bank in response to this development.
Cooper emphasized that recognizing Palestine aims to enhance security by preserving the potential for a two-state solution. The UK, along with Canada, Australia, and Portugal, took a symbolic step by acknowledging Palestine on Sunday. In contrast, Netanyahu, also present at the UN, expressed strong opposition ahead of further recognitions expected at the General Assembly.
Regarding the situation, Netanyahu declared, “A Palestinian state will not be established,” and warned of repercussions upon his return from the United States. He criticized leaders recognizing Palestine, stating that it rewards terrorism. Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to confirm France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood at an upcoming conference co-hosted with Saudi Arabia at the UN.
In response to concerns that Israel might accelerate West Bank settlements, Cooper reiterated the UK’s stance against such actions. She stressed that the decision to recognize Palestine is about promoting security for both Israelis and Palestinians, peace, and justice in the Middle East.
The UK plans to advocate for international support for a peace framework in the Middle East at the UN General Assembly. Cooper aims to strengthen the international consensus on the peace process and address security threats, including Russia’s activities. Additionally, she will reaffirm the UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s security during the assembly.
Cooper highlighted the importance of proactive diplomacy amid global challenges, emphasizing the need for international collaboration on issues like peace in the Middle East and countering Russian aggression. She emphasized the role of the UN in addressing global challenges and contributing to national priorities in the UK.
