Anton Du Beke Admits to Not Recognizing Celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing

Published on

TV personality Anton Du Beke has confessed to not recognizing several celebrities selected for the current season of the popular show Strictly Come Dancing. Reflecting the ongoing criticism that the BBC dance competition’s lineup may lack star power compared to previous years, he revealed that he might see some contestants for the first time on the dance floor.

In a recent statement, Anton mentioned that with time, he has become less familiar with the show’s participants, stating, “When I first started, we sort of knew them, but now as you get older… there are a number of people on the show that I am not familiar with.” Referring to last season’s contestant Tasha Ghouri, he admitted, “I mean last year, Tasha? I did not know Tasha. No, I don’t know a number of people on the show.”

As the show increasingly features online personalities, Anton acknowledged feeling perplexed by the introduction of individuals he is unfamiliar with, stating, “You don’t know who they are, but that is normal.”

Regarding the lineup for the current season, including 15 celebrities from various backgrounds, such as reality TV stars, sports personalities, actors, presenters, and YouTubers, Anton expressed that he has not yet observed enough to predict a winner.

In addition, Anton shared insights on judging the contestants, highlighting the importance of observing their body language and routines to gauge their progress and dedication. He also addressed the advantage contestants with dance experience may have and called for adjustments to the voting system to allow more flexibility for viewers to participate.

Despite the evolving cast and format of the show, Anton emphasized the enduring appeal of Strictly Come Dancing, attributing its success to the enthusiasm of the participants and viewers alike, who engage with the show for various reasons ranging from the performances to the judging panel.

The new season of Strictly Come Dancing premieres this Saturday at 6.40 pm on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer.
