A horse named Haaland, bred in New Zealand and trained in Australia, made a remarkable comeback on the racetrack after a long dry spell. Despite sharing a name with Manchester City’s star striker Erling Haaland, this seven-year-old racehorse does not boast a prolific record like his namesake. With two wins, six seconds, and four thirds in 22 career starts, Haaland recently achieved a significant milestone by clinching his first victory at a top-tier metropolitan track in Sandown-Hillside, Victoria.
Breaking an 800-day winless streak, Haaland triumphed in a £25,000 handicap race under the guidance of jockey and trainer Lucinda Boyd. Sporting a distinctive green and white-checkered visor, the horse secured a neck victory, marking Boyd’s 118th career win and her tenth win since obtaining a training license. The win led to heartwarming celebrations in the winners’ circle, where Boyd and her husband Anthony, who jointly manage their Ballarat stable, shared emotional moments.
Expressing her joy, Lucinda Boyd stated, “The horse truly deserved this win. I am thrilled about his achievement. He was in great shape, and with the change in equipment and distance, I was hopeful for success.” Despite the challenges of managing a stable with only two people, Boyd highlighted the hard work put in by herself, her husband, and their children, emphasizing that victories like this make it all worthwhile.
However, Boyd later revealed the extraordinary journey Haaland had undertaken to reach this triumph. The horse had faced atrial fibrillation, requiring treatment in Melbourne where he underwent multiple shocks to restore his heart rhythm, even experiencing a heart attack during recovery. Boyd described Haaland’s resurgence as nothing short of miraculous, emphasizing the significance of his victory at a prestigious racing event.
